Elton John is officially being elevated to iconic status by the U.K. music industry. The Grammy winning pop-rock vet will be the first recipient of the newly-created BRITS Icon Award in London on September 2nd.
An extension of the U.K.'s annual BRIT Awards, "The Hollywood Reporter" says the Icon Award will be presented during a stand alone ceremony to be broadcast on the U.K.'s ITV network later that month.
John, who recently canceled a series of concert dates after a bout with appendicitis, is expected to perform at the event. He was also just announced as one of the performers for the upcoming iHeartRadio Music Festival, taking place September 20th through September 21st in Las Vegas.
